Does Window Film Help in Iowa Winters?

The Short Answer

Yes, if you pick the right film. Most solar window film is built to keep summer heat out. Low-E (low-emissivity) window film does that too, and it also reflects heat from your furnace back into the room, so your windows lose less warmth on cold Siouxland nights. That makes it a year-round upgrade, not just a summer one.

Where Winter Heat Goes

Windows are usually the least insulated part of an outside wall. On a cold night, warmth from the room radiates to the glass and out of the house. That is why a room with big windows can feel chilly near the glass even when the windows are sealed tight. Low-E film adds a thin metallized layer that reflects that radiant heat back inside, so the glass stops pulling as much warmth out of the room.

What an Iowa Winter Does to Your Windows

Low sun, more glare: from December through February the sun sits low in the southern sky and shines straight into south-facing rooms, and snow on the ground adds more glare. Window film cuts that glare without blocking the view.
Cold spots near the glass: low-E film helps rooms with large windows feel more even from one side to the other.
UV doesn't take the winter off: window film blocks up to 99% of the UV rays that fade floors, rugs and furniture, all year.
The same film works in July: when summer comes back, the film rejects solar heat and keeps sunny rooms cooler.

Solar Film or Low-E Film?

Standard solar film is the right choice when summer heat and glare are the main problem. Low-E film is the better fit when you also want to hold heat in during the winter, especially in rooms with a lot of glass. We install LLumar films, including LLumar Vista low-E, and we check the type of glass in each window before recommending a film, so the film is matched to your windows.

Can Window Film Be Installed in Winter?

Yes. We install from inside your home, so cold weather doesn't stop the job. Film takes longer to cure when it's cold outside, so you may see a little haze or a few small water spots for the first few weeks. That is normal and clears up on its own as the film dries.

What It Costs

Home window film in Sioux City runs $8–$12 per square foot installed, scaffolding included.
